How to Remove Rust from a Garage Door

Old-and-Rusty-Metal-Plate

If your steel garage door has rust, it has already begun to corrode. It is not uncommon for a garage door to start rusting at the bottom where contact with rain and corrosive materials is more likely. Don’t procrastinate if you see evidence of oxidation. It can spread quickly, reduce curb appeal, and possibly lead to expensive repairs. Fortunately, you may be able to remove the rust. Continue reading to learn how to remove rust from a garage door in Las Vegas. Removing Rust from Your Garage Door If you have a modern garage door, it is most likely resistant to rust. Older steel doors, on the other hand, tend to corrode over time. When you inspect your garage door, start at the bottom where rust is most likely to appear, and look elsewhere for any spots of corrosion. To remove rust safely and successfully before there’s a serious problem, follow these steps: Close the garage door and turn off the electrical supply to the garage door opener. Clean the door with a cloth soaked with warm water and soap, starting at the bottom or where you see the most rust. The door should then be allowed to dry. Soak a cloth in white vinegar and wipe the rusty section. Then use a steel wool pad to scrub the rust and help it dissolve; it’s important to be thorough as any leftover spots can spread again. Using sandpaper, sand down any part of the garage door where there is rust. Continue sanding about 2 inches around areas of oxidation. Use a metal bonding agent to fill any holes in the door and wait for it to dry. Sand the filled area with a fine-grit sandpaper. When the process is complete, wipe off any dust to make sure the surface is smooth and clean. After the door is sanded and filled, apply a zinc chromate primer to prevent additional rusting, and wait until it is dry to paint the garage door. Using a rust-resistant paint that matches the color of your garage door, apply a coating that protects it from future corrosion. It’s best to paint the entire door to prevent freshly painted areas from standing out, or flashing. Some types of doors may require specific painting products or rust-removal/painting methods. Check with the manufacturer or owner’s guide if there are any specific requirements for your garage door model and brand. Spray painting is commonly used for garage doors. If applying a spray paint, use painter’s tape and newspaper to protect areas surrounding where you applied the primer. You can also apply the paint directly using a paintbrush or roller (but be sure the paint is applied smoothly to avoid drips). When Should I Not Remove Rust? If there’s so much rust attempting to remove it risks damaging the garage door, consult a professional first. Another reason is if the door is protected under a warranty that covers rust removal. Proceeding yourself then risks voiding the warranty. Your garage door manufacturer will fix the problem at no cost anyway, so it’s best to have a skilled contractor handle the job. Garage Door Decorative Hardware Options

New-American-Stone-Home-with-Blue-Decorative-Gables-and-White-Decorated-Garage-Door

Installing garage door decorative hardware is a great way to upgrade the look of your garage door. Decorative elements include a variety of ornamental parts and accessories, whether for the purpose of updating the design, adding functional elements, or increasing visual curb appeal. Such an upgrade doesn’t have to mean replacing your entire garage door. Here are some options for decorative hardware that are worth considering. Types of Garage Door Decorative Hardware There are many garage door decorative hardware options. For these most common types, you’ll find hardware with different designs, materials, and finishes. Most are generally suited for steel and wood garage doors and can typically be installed as a quick home DIY project. Some of the more popular options include: Handles: Popular for carriage house garage doors and any door that opens from the center, handles add both charm and function. On that level they should be securely fastened. You don’t want a handle below shoulder height. Alternative types include lift handles, which attach to the bottom-center of the door and are not functional, and pull handles. These include curved and L-shaped handles that can provide a more vintage look for your garage door. Hinges: When installed on the side of a garage door, hinges can create a rustic look. Decorative hinges are usually placed on the top and bottom where the door’s normal ones are, adding to the charm of carriage house or barn-style garage doors. Corner brackets: Are two components joined at a right angle or wider angle that attach to the corners of the door. Like hinges, they help to add some visual definition. Clavos: Bolt-like studs/nails used to decorate rustic or industrial garage doors. They are popular for doors with arched tops as well; numerous shapes, finishes, and materials are available to customize your design. Ring Pullers: An alternative to handles, these ring-shaped knockers fit in the decorative/functional category. They can add charm that helps your garage door, and home, stand out (simple or more ornate ring pullers can achieve the desired effect). Whether you prefer a subtle or more sophisticated visual upgrade, these are all good ways to update the look of your garage door. And you don’t need too many accessories to do so. Garage Door Decorative Hardware Design Tips Unlike with the basic components responsible for the operation of your garage door, there are no musts with decorative hardware. The options and designs chosen are entirely up to you. But here are some design tips to keep in mind when selecting hardware: Choose one or two decorative elements; when installing decorative hardware, it is best to be simple and not overdo it. Consider the design of your home and garage door; a handle or bracket should be consistent with the style of its surroundings (rustic, modern, etc.). For functional and aesthetic purposes, carefully consider the placement of decorations. What Is a Jackshaft Garage Door Opener?

Two-Story-Contemporary-House-with-Blue-Roof-and-Two-Blue-Garage-Doors

Most people envision a garage door opener as an overhead system. A jackshaft garage door opener is an exception that, instead of mounted near the ceiling, it’s installed on the right or left side of a garage door. It is typically placed at the attachment points of the garage door springs and provides as much power as more familiar belt-, chain-, or screw-drive models. Jackshaft openers work by turning a torsion bar. The force of the bar on the garage door springs raises and lowers the door on its tracks. This setup can be used with any type of garage door (except single panel doors), even those up to 14 feet high. Residential models are therefore quite versatile. Although you might spend a little more, jackshaft garage door openers come with a wide range of benefits. Some of the greatest advantages include: Suitability for All Garage Designs: Whether your garage has a low height, sloped ceiling, cathedral ceiling, limited depth, or ceiling-mounted pipes, a jackshaft opener provides a convenient alternative when you don’t have the minimum 48 inches of clearance for an overhead trolley system. More Storage Room: By installing a jackshaft opener, you free up space for storage of items such as bicycles, camping equipment, canoes, and other large items. You can get as creative with storage as you want, as garage ceiling space won’t be taken up by so many garage door components. Quieter Performance: Jackshaft garage door openers are very quiet compared to other common models. You can expect virtually silent operation. This is great if your garage is located near a bedroom or other living space. Are Jackshaft Garage Door Openers Safe? Jackshaft openers include all the latest modern safety features such as photo-eye sensors and automatic reversal systems. Some models include lights for added safety. All can be manually operated in an emergency and use rolling door codes each time the system is operated. Like with other types of garage doors, this prevents thieves from copying the code to gain entry. Can I Link My Jackshaft Opener to My Smartphone? Many jackshaft models have the latest connectivity features. It is quite common to find Wi-Fi connectivity and remote smartphone control and monitoring. With LiftMaster jackshaft openers, the free MyQ app allows control of your garage door from anywhere with an Apple or Android device. You can even synchronize the door with other home automation and security devices/systems. Other Benefits Jackshaft garage door openers are easy to maintain. There’s no need to reach up to the ceiling to inspect or adjust one. They also offer peace of mind, as there are no motors or metal components hanging above your head or car. In addition, some openers have an optional backup battery that kicks in when the power goes out. Choosing Your Jackshaft Garage Door Opener You want to select a jackshaft opener that is properly sized for your garage, delivers an appropriate amount of power, and that has all the features you need. There are different models, features, and configurations to consider. Other than cost, there are few downsides. The exceptions being a retrofit may be required for installation, an electric outlet must be located within six feet of the system, and adequate space is required. Clearance requirements include at least 7 inches on the side and 3 inches above the torsion rod. If you need assistance choosing or installing a jackshaft garage door opener, contact Precision Door Service of Las Vegas and we’ll be glad to help. Call us at 702-637-2700 today!

DC Motor Technology for Garage Doors

Opening-Garage-Door-And-Automatic-Garage-Door-Opener-Mounted-on-Ceiling-With-Emergency-Cord

If you’re shopping for a new garage door opener, a DC motor is one option you’ll find on the market. Motor type is just one consideration. Like many homeowners, you have probably looked at the pros and cons of belt drive, chain drive, screw drive, and other types of systems for your garage door. But here is a look at how a DC-powered garage door opener works and the ways it can benefit you. What Is Garage Door DC Motor Technology? To help you understand what DC motor technology is, we’ll start by explaining the difference between AC and DC power: AC Power: AC, or alternating current, changes directions, going to and from the power source continuously. DC Power: DC, or direct current, constantly flows in a single direction. While AC garage door openers have traditionally been more common and preferred for their durability, DC-powered systems are gradually becoming more popular. It’s becoming easier to find a DC smart garage door opener as DC power supports a wider range of features now found in many models. Advantages of DC Motor Technology for Garage Doors There are many reasons to consider switching to a DC garage door opener. Here are some of the leading advantages of installing DC motor technology in your garage: Battery backup: An optional backup battery is not available with AC garage door opener motors. The battery of a DC motor, however, kicks in in case there is a power outage, and may allow your garage door to open and close as much as 20 times in a day. Speed adjustment: A DC motor is more versatile and is capable of variable speed operation, allowing you to adjust the speed of your garage door. Adjustable speed provides for a softer start and stop, which can reduce strain on garage door components. Quiet operation: A DC motor uses less power, so it usually runs quieter than its AC alternative. This means if you have an attached garage, there will be less noise for occupants of adjacent rooms to deal with. You may not even know the system is running, even if you’re in the house. Energy savings: A garage door opener motor that runs off of DC power is more energy efficient, which is better for the environment and can help reduce your monthly utility bills. Smart technology options: Since DC motors are smaller, more features can be added to the modern smart garage door opener. A DC-powered garage door opener may feature smartphone monitoring capabilities so you can track its status from anywhere, an internet gateway, and an auto close mechanism. Numerous apps are now available to operate and monitor your garage door remotely, a feature enabled by DC power. If you’re looking to overhaul your garage door opener with DC technology, you’ll want to consider the same factors with traditional systems. These include the right door type for your home, a suitable horsepower rating, insulation, and safety features such as auto-reverse and overhead lights. There are also options unique to DC motors, including brush and brushless models that tend to last longer. Contact Precision Door Service of Las Vegas Trusted for professional garage door opener installation and garage door repair in Las Vegas, we can help if you’re considering an upgrade to a DC-powered garage door opener. 5 Reasons Why You Should Upgrade Your Garage Door

Two-Story-Suburban-Home-Light-Yellow-and-Gray-with-Two-Garage-Doors

A garage door upgrade has many benefits, from appearance to long-term value. It is also a relatively affordable home improvement project. There are many practical benefits to updating your garage door, as it’s one of the most prominent and heavily used parts of your home. Here are some of the top reasons to consider investing in a garage door replacement or upgrade. Increase Curb Appeal A garage door can take up to a third or more of the exterior front façade. Whether the door is worn and battered or doesn’t match the style of your home that well, upgrading it can be highly beneficial. The end result can modernize the look of your home or create more consistency in terms of style. Repainting or a landscaping update typically don’t have as many curb appeal advantages. In addition, there are many designs, styles, materials, and colors to take advantage of, as well as windows, surface textures, decorative handles, and other options. Add to Your Home’s Resale Value The garage door is one of the first things people see. Passersby, visitors, or potential buyers will notice immediately if it’s outdated or in need of repair. Compared to many other home renovations, garage doors tend to retain their value. And, the resale value of your house may increase, so you can get a higher sale price from a future buyer. Garage door replacement also takes less time than other home renovations, which is great for busy families who’d like to boost their home value. Reduce Maintenance Costs The older your garage door, the more expensive upkeep is. You will have less maintenance issues to deal with when you upgrade your garage door. Problems such as broken springs, track issues, rust, and general wear and tear don’t affect new doors, plus modern garage doors are designed to be easy to maintain. They can also be easily cleaned with soap and water. You won’t need to scrape off flaking paint or constantly check for mechanical issues. Downtime associated with repairs or potential breakdowns is eliminated as well. Return on Investment Return on investment, or ROI, is an important consideration. In addition to recouping the costs of installation through a higher sale price, tax credits, and rebates, you can also save through energy efficiency. An insulated garage door can help reduce your heating and cooling costs as it prevents air leakage, reducing the demand on your HVAC system. Less wear on your AC and heater can mean fewer repairs later, which also helps you save over time. Greater Home Security Thieves and burglars often target garage doors as entry points. By updating your garage door, you can keep you family and belonging safe. Newer models are harder to break into thanks to rolling code technology, more durable construction materials, and how they’re installed. Your garage door can now be integrated with other home security features, such as smart alarm systems, video cameras, and smartphone apps for remote monitoring and control. Contact Precision Door Service of Las Vegas A trusted Las Vegas garage door service company, we can assist you with professional garage door repair and help weigh your options when it comes to a garage door upgrade. Are Garage Doors Covered by Home Insurance?

Beautiful-Exterior-of-Newly-Built-Luxury-Home-with-Two-Garage-Doors

Homeowners insurance provides coverage for damage that may be otherwise cost-prohibitive to fix. If your garage door were to be damaged in an accident or other event you have no control over, your policy may cover the cost of repairs. It depends on many factors. How do you know your home insurance policy covers your garage door? What happens when damage occurs and you need to fix it quickly? Continue reading to find answers to the most common questions regarding garage doors and home insurance. Does My Home Insurance Cover the Cost of a Broken Garage Door? One insurance policy may differ greatly from another. Sometimes, you may be able to pay more per month for fuller coverage. Another insurance company may sell separate policies to cover additional parts of your home. In general, homeowners insurance protects your home, items inside it, other structures on your property, and valuables in and around your home. It also covers damages to other people’s property as well as injuries. If events such as fire, theft, and vandalism occur, you are usually reimbursed for the cost of repairs or replacing damaged or destroyed items. Check your policy to find out if your garage door is covered. If it’s part of an attached garage, your insurance most likely provides protection for damage by something beyond your control, such as a storm or hit-and-run accident. Detached garages are covered only if the policy includes other structures on your property. However, if it’s your fault a garage door is broken or the damage was caused by normal wear and tear, it’s probably not covered under your home insurance policy. Another consideration is the cost of filing a claim. If you decide to pay out-of-pocket, you may avoid higher insurance premiums. Reporting a damage claim can cause your insurance premium to increase. It’s therefore important to weigh the cost of repairs versus the sum of higher monthly premiums over time. Will Auto Insurance Cover Hitting My Garage Door? It’s not likely, and your homeowners insurance won’t likely cover the cost of fixing car damage. But the good news is your car insurance policy will. This can be a tricky situation because running into a garage door can render it unusable. A car can cause large dents, break through the door, or knock it off the rails. Oftentimes a garage door must be replaced after such an accident. What If Someone Else Hit My Garage Door? File a claim with their car insurance company. It is more likely to cover the cost of repairs or replacement if the policy holder’s car ran into your garage door by accident. It’s important to be familiar with what your auto and home insurance covers. Then, if something were to happen, you could act quickly in filing a claim and getting the cost of a garage door repair or replacement covered. The sooner it’s fixed, the safer and more functional your home will once again be. The Importance of Annual Garage Door Maintenance

Luxury-One-Level-House-Exterior-with-Brick-Trim-Garage

Some parts of your home need regular annual maintenance. Your garage door is one of those parts. Keeping up to date with annual garage door maintenance is an important step to keep your garage door operating smoothly over time.  Not to mention, a functioning garage can help to increase the value of your home by up to 4 percent. Your garage door plays a pivotal role because it often serves as a second entrance to your home, as well as provides a shield for your home, family, and belongings.  Garage door maintenance will help ensure that your garage door works effectively, safely, and securely while potentially mitigating the need for expensive repairs later on. As with any major household electronic appliance, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  Continue reading to learn the top three reasons why annual garage door maintenance is important and how preventative maintenance can help save you time, money, and energy.  1. Mitigate Expensive Future Repairs An unexpected garage door repair can be a financial burden for any family. In a recent survey report by Forbes magazine, nearly 63 percent of Americans don’t have $500 set aside for an emergency like an unexpected repair. If your garage door breaks down because you have not been maintaining it, the unexpectedly high cost can set your family back financially. This does not have to be the case, especially since preventative maintenance can keep you from shelling out big bucks for major repairs.  Annual garage door maintenance can help you address unseen issues, avoid unexpected and even avoidable repairs, and reduce unnecessary expenses later on. When you proactively address wear and tear with preventative maintenance, you will keep your garage door work smoothly throughout the entire year.  A common issue that regular maintenance can help you steer clear of nuances includes catching rust and corrosion early. Rust can affect not only the garage door itself but also other garage door components, like springs and bolts.  Addressing rust and corrosion early on helps keep the garage door’s parts working effectively, while preventing unwanted garage noise issues. Schedule an annual inspection with a professional Las Vegas garage door service today to protect your investment in your garage door. 2. Increased Garage Door Safety Annual garage door maintenance can help you make sure that key garage door components are operating properly. In doing so, you can prevent injury and help keep your garage safe.  Without maintenance, you might be left in the dark as to the actual condition of your garage door, as well as how safe it currently is. This is especially important in protecting your family, especially since every year, there are roughly 20,000 garage door accidents.   Just about 60% of garage door injuries are caused by pinched or crushed section joints. 16.5% of injuries are caused by garage doors falling.  2.7% of injuries are the result of someone working on the garage door. Typically, this person has little to no experience working with garage doors, and the level of injury can range from minor to severe. For this reason, it’s important to have a knowledgeable garage door technician work on your garage door. Accidents with garage doors can happen for several reasons. When garage door parts become broken or malfunction, they might become sharp or dangerous. Coupled with the fact that garage doors are heavy, loose or broken springs and torsion springs can be hazardous if they do not function properly. Be sure that certain maintenance and repairs are only handled by a garage door professional Garage Door Safety Sensors The good news is that today’s garage door systems are safer than those from the past, with safety sensors playing a huge role in the industry. In 1993, U.S. Federal Law UL 325 made it so that all garage doors that are manufactured must feature a safety-reversing system. Safety sensors are the most common type of safety mechanism that you will find on garage doors.  Some safety sensors are universal and can work with any garage door, while some garage doors do best with a specific safety sensor. At any rate, safety sensors help protect your family by doing the following: Keeping little kids and pets safe  Prevent vehicles damage Aiding in garage door maintenance 3. Security from Garage Break-ins Your garage door protects your home’s belongings and valuables. Almost 34% of home break-ins happen through the garage. Having a professional garage door technician look at your garage door’s closing mechanisms and loose bolts can help ensure that the door closes and seals properly, adding to your peace of mind. Another cause of garage break-ins is a stolen remote. By having an annual inspection with a garage door technician, you give yourself the opportunity to make sure your opener system works. This is also a good time to get a replacement opener remote if needed.  Contact Precision Door Las Vegas  While you should be doing basic maintenance of your garage door by checking it out routinely, it’s imperative to have a professional aid you in repairs, installation, and more extensive maintenance needs. Top 5 Reasons Why Your Garage Door Remote Is Not Working

Person-Pointing-Remote-Toward-Garage-Door

Finding that your garage door remote is not working is frustrating. However, garage remote control issues are common. The reasons range from low batteries to signal problems, to faults in your home’s electrical system. A malfunctioning garage door transmitter can be a major inconvenience. There are several reasons Las Vegas homeowners may find their remote doesn’t work; here are five common causes and potential solutions. 1. The Garage Door Remote Batteries are Low Depleted batteries can cause your garage door remote to fail or run inconsistently. To generate the signal needed to raise or lower the door, the device must have power from its batteries, which typically last about two years. Use the wall mounted control panel to operate the door. If it opens and closes normally, then your garage door remote control likely has low or dead batteries. Replacing them should resolve the issue. 2. The Remote Signal Has Been Disrupted If the remote doesn’t work with new batteries, there may be a signal disruption. This may be caused by the remote being out of range. Another common cause is damage to the garage door opener antenna. To troubleshoot the problem, make sure you’re standing within 20 feet of the garage door when using the remote. Check the antenna if trouble persists. If there’s dirt or debris on it, clean it off, and check that it’s pointed towards the door. A damaged/broken one should be repaired or replaced by a professional. 3. The Remote’s Lock Button is On Check your garage door control panel’s lock button to see whether it was accidentally turned on. A light on the panel will flash twice to indicate the lock is active. This function prevents the logic board from accepting remote control signals. Pushing the lock button should turn it off so you can use the remote again. 4. The Remote May Need to Be Reprogrammed Disruptions in communication between the remote and garage door opener can cause them to go out of sync. Reprogramming the garage door remote can resolve this issue. Instructions should be available in the remote’s user manual or on the manufacturer’s website. In general, you would reprogram a remote with these simple steps: Press/hold the remote’s learn button Within 30 seconds, hold the remote button Wait three seconds or the opener’s lights blink or flash If having difficulty programming the remote, press and hold the remote control button. Then enter a PIN on the keypad and hold the enter button. If the LED light near the learn button blinks, a signal is being sent; press and release the button to program the remote. 5. Electrical Issue with the Garage Door Control System An electrical issue can cause your garage door remote to not respond. If the causes above don’t apply to your situation, there could be wiring issues or a problem with the receiver board. A damaged/tripped GFI/GFCI can cut power to your garage door to prevent electrical overloads or overheating. Resetting the GFCI should restore power; otherwise, contact a garage door technician for assistance. Contact Precision Door Service of Las Vegas If none of the above tips have resolved your problem, contact our Las Vegas garage door service company. A professional will inspect your garage door system for remote control or other potential problems. If necessary, we can provide garage door remote replacement or garage door repair. We’re also trusted throughout the valley for high-quality garage door installation, and continue to serve customers during the coronavirus pandemic with no-contact service, social distancing, sanitization, and use of masks/PPE. They complement modern architectural styles quite well. For most homes, the front of a house is consistent in terms of color and style. And since a garage door takes up so much surface area, it can provide a powerful accent. What Does Contemporary Mean in Architecture? Contemporary generally refers to an architectural style that appeared in the 1970s. It is defined by clean, simple lines, which can be straight or curvy; sometimes a stylistic approach can combine both. Contemporary garage doors are usually simple in texture with a flat panel design and are overall quite conservative. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be innovative and stand out. What Does a Contemporary Garage Door Look Like? There’s actually a good degree of variability with contemporary design. The term “contemporary” refers to the popular trends of a time, so it can be somewhat fluid. Here are some features of modern garage doors you might consider: Color: Many garage doors feature black and white. These are neutral yet eye-catching colors and can create an appealing dimensional effect. Earth-like tones such as forest green or terracotta provide a muted yet appealing design scheme from a conservative approach. Materials: Modern garage doors often have more than one material. Whether for aesthetics, practicality, or efficiency, a door may contain composite wood, aluminum, and fiberglass, not to mention a layer of insulating materials. Aluminum striping is now common as well. Combining materials can add strength and durability. Windows: For the most part, windows (if used) are placed on the right or left side of the door, or across the top. A modern trend is to forgo symmetry and create a design with offset windows, while thin striped windows across a wood surface can add spunk. Built-in windows are cool, and they also allow natural light into your garage. Industrial Design: Doors can feature metal frames with panes of fiberglass or other materials. This creates an industrial look that some homeowners prefer. If you want glass but to keep your privacy, reinforced/glazed glass is the way to go. Shutter Paneled Garage Doors: An alternative to the typical flat appearance of garage doors, these used layered wood to create a closed shutter effect. The design of a modern house or cottage can be enhanced with this approach. The Ultra-Modern Contemporary Door Although horizontal lines are pretty much standard, there are many ways to make your contemporary garage door unique. Whether you decide to be creative with windows or tempered glass, mix steel and aluminum, or add a grainy wood-like texture to metal, a modern design can make your home stand out. The options in today’s market make choosing a garage door a more personal experience. You can customize it in virtually any way you like. Make your garage door look like a wall or install one that makes your garage feel more like a living space. Digital connectivity is another aspect of modern garage doors. Many models connect to home automation systems or operate by using a smartphone app. Shop for Contemporary Garage Doors Today Precision Door Service of Las Vegas offers various styles of modern garage doors from leading brands, such as Amarr, Clopay, and C.H.I. How to Tell If Your Garage Door Sensor Is Out of Alignment

garage door safety sensor

Garage door sensors, or photo-eyes, are very effective at making sure your garage door is safe. They are designed to detect any obstructions and reverse the door if a person, pet, or vehicle is in the way. However, they are prone to problems over time. A sensor can become misaligned due to vibrations or if something accidentally bumps into it. How Do I Find the Garage Door Sensor? Located near the base of the garage door, the photo-eye sensors look like small black boxes. One unit generates an invisible beam, while the other receives it. When the beam’s signal is interrupted, this breaks the circuit causing the garage door to stop and reverse. Determining Whether There’s an Alignment Issue If your garage door is reversing for no apparent reason, check whether something is obstructing the sensor’s signal, such as boxes, tools, balls, toys, or other objects. Otherwise, inspect the wires to make sure there’s no wiring damage. If all else seems fine, these are some indicators your garage door sensors are out of alignment: The door won’t close: If the garage door won’t close, and there’s no other reason for this such as a dirty lens or damaged wire, it’s likely the sensor is out of alignment. Colored lights: A garage door photo eye features an LED light on the outside. If the sensor is working, the light will be green. A red and/or blinking light indicates that the sensor is not aligned. Blinking lights: The LED lights on the sensors should always be lit. If a light is flickering or has gone out, the sensor may have been moved; adjust the unit manually to see if the light turns back on. Loose sensor: The bracket or screw securing the sensor can become loose, making the sensor more prone to misalignment; if so, the bracket/screw can be tightened to solve the problem. Test the door: If the remote isn’t working, try the wall switch; press and hold it if nothing happens to override the garage door opener. You can then test the sensors and align them if necessary. Use a level: A level can be used to determine whether the sensors are aligned. In some cases, they may not have been installed at equal heights. Tips on Fixing a Misaligned Garage Door Sensor Correcting a misaligned sensor is usually simple. Generally, this requires loosening the screw, removing the wing nut, and removing the sensor from its bracket. Next, point it in the opposite direction of the other photo-eye for 10 seconds. Then rotate it back into position and make sure both are level. Secure the sensor if everything looks good and verify whether it is working. In addition to misalignment, garage door sensors can collect dirt. While you’re checking the sensor, examine the lens for any dirt, dust, or spider webs. If anything is on the surface, wipe it away with a clean cloth. Also check whether the sensors are wet from rain or sprinkler water; if so, dry them. As for the LED lights, another reason they may fail is a lack of power. Check that the sensors are connected and the circuit breaker is turned on.
